Child Swallows Hulk Toy: In Gujarat, a one-and-a-half-year-old child swallowed a Hulk toy. He then started vomiting and became very distressed. When his parents took him to the hospital, the toy was clearly visible in the X-ray. Doctors then removed the toy through endoscopy, saving the child's life. According to doctors, if a child swallows a toy or any sharp object, they should be taken to the hospital immediately. Delaying this can be fatal for the child.
When a child turns one year old, they often try to put most things in their mouth. Sometimes, while playing, a child swallows marbles, pins, nails, coins, magnets, or button batteries. This can cause difficulty breathing and a deterioration in their health. In such a condition, it is crucial to take the child to the hospital immediately.
Dr. Anil Arora, Chairman of the Gastroenterology Department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, explained that this is a phase in a child's development. After children reach six months of age, they try to identify things with their mouths and put everything in their mouths. Parents should be extremely careful during this time.
The doctor explained that when a child swallows things like coins, marbles, button batteries, magnets, pins, needles, or nails, these objects often get stuck in their esophagus. In this condition, the child cannot breathe, and their health deteriorates. If the object is smooth, it may reach the stomach. Sharp objects often get stuck in the child's throat.
Nowadays, battery-operated toys are becoming increasingly popular, and these contain button batteries and magnets. If a child swallows these, it poses the greatest danger. Magnets can cause the intestines to stick together, leading to a serious condition. Magnets often break into several pieces, which can make it difficult for doctors to remove them.
According to experts, batteries contain lead, which can sometimes dissolve in the stomach. This condition can cause toxicity in the stomach and can even be fatal for the child. If a child swallows something and it gets stuck in the upper part of the throat, patting the back might help dislodge it, but parents should avoid trying to remove the object with their fingers.
Dr. Arora says that if a child has difficulty breathing, is choking, vomiting, or crying, it could be a sign that they have swallowed something. In such cases, parents should immediately take the child to the nearest hospital and have them examined by a doctor. If a child swallows something and is brought to the hospital within 4-6 hours, the object is usually still in the stomach and easier to remove.
