New Delhi: Russia on Tuesday said it hasn't received any communication from India indicating that New Delhi plans to stop buying Russian oil. The comment came a day after US President Donald Trump claimed such a commitment was made as part of a new trade deal with India.
The Kremlin said it was unaware of any shift in India's oil purchase strategy following Trump's remarks.
"So far, we haven't heard any statements from New Delhi on this matter," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told media in Moscow.
Trump had said Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to halt Russian crude purchases while easing tariffs and boosting oil imports from the US and potentially Venezuela.
"We spoke about many things, including Trade, and ending the War with Russia and Ukraine," Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social. "He agreed to stop buying Russian Oil, and to buy much more from the United States and, potentially, Venezuela."
India, however, hasn't publicly or explicitly made any comment on stopping Russian oil purchases. Modi welcomed the tariff reduction in a post on X on Monday night but didn't make any mention of Russian oil.
The White House said the 25% extra tariff imposed on India for its oil purchases from Russia has been removed. The Trump administration had continued to pressurise India to stop Russian oil imports but did not offer any diktat for China, the largest buyer of Russian oil.
