Australian Open: Alcaraz and Sabalenka reach quarterfinals

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka, living up to their name, registered a straight sets win on Sunday (January 25) and reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.

 

Alcaraz, trying to complete his career Grand Slam by winning the Australian Open, registered a 7-6 (6), 6-4, 7-5 win over Tommy Paul, while women’s top seed Sabalenka defeated Canada’s No. 17 Victoria Mboko 6-1, 7-6 (1).

 

Jovic’s challenge in front of Sabalenka

Sabalenka, who was trying to win the Australian Open for the third time in the last four years, presented a brilliant example of her strong service and defeated the 19-year-old Canadian player in just 31 minutes. World number one Sabalenka, 27, said of young Mboko, ‘She is an amazing player at such a young age. It’s incredible to see these young players progress on the Tour. He presented a tough challenge to me. I am happy that I was successful in winning the match.

 

Sabalenka will face 18-year-old Eva Jovic in the quarterfinals. This 29th seeded player defeated Yulia Putintseva 6-0, 6-1 in 53 minutes and made it to the last-8 of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. Another title contender, Coco Gauff, has made it to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the third consecutive year. Coco Gauff defeated 19th-ranked Karolina Muchova 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

 

Will Alcaraz get the trophy in Melbourne?

Alcaraz made some changes in his game which proved effective in this match. He did not commit any double-fault. Alcaraz said after the match, ‘It was a tough match and I am very happy to win in straight sets. To be honest, I am quite impressed with the service I have given in my first four matches played at Melbourne Park. Alcaraz has not yet won a trophy at the Australian Open in her tennis career.

 

He has never been able to progress beyond the quarter finals in this tournament. In the last-8, he will face local favorite Alex de Minaur or No. 10 Alexander Bublik.
