Cancer diagnoses among those under 50 are on the rise, prompting one medical expert to highlight the warning signs that younger adults must not overlook. Younger people often brush off early indicators of serious illness, attributing them instead to stress, poor diet or lifestyle factors, without seeking advice from their GP.
Radiation oncologist Dr Jiri Kubes cautioned that overlooking these subtle initial symptoms could result in late diagnosis and affect treatment outcomes. He encouraged younger people to pay attention to their bodies and follow their gut feelings.
Data from Cancer Research UK showed that cancer rates amongst 25 to 49 year olds increased by 24% between 1995 and 2019. However, nine out of 10 cancer cases still occur in those aged over 50.
The greater danger for younger people lies in potentially postponing their own diagnosis by ignoring their symptoms. The doctor stated: "The goal is awareness, not fear. Cancer risk is no longer confined to older generations, and people need to recognise that." Early symptoms under 50s shouldn't ignore:
- Persistent changes in bowel habits
- Unexplained weight loss
- Ongoing fatigue that doesn't improve with rest
- Lumps or swelling that don't go away
- Frequent headaches or neurological changes
- Unusual bleeding or pain that persists
The specialist outlined how to distinguish between a possible cancer indicator and everyday ailments linked to contemporary living: "Persistent changes are what matter. Ongoing digestive issues, unexplained weight loss, unusual lumps, changes in bowel habits or fatigue that doesn't improve should never be ignored - even in your 20s or 30s."
Those experiencing such symptoms shouldn't alarm themselves unnecessarily, but seeking medical advice is recommended. Dr Kubes stressed that "duration matters more than severity", with any signs persisting for weeks warranting attention.
Catching cancer early can significantly alter patient outcomes and determine how intensive treatment must be. For younger individuals with many years ahead, this distinction can profoundly affect their long-term well-being.
The medical director at Prague's Proton Therapy Center urged: "If something feels wrong and it doesn't go away, get it checked. Being proactive is not overreacting. Early action saves lives."
Scientists are investigating why increasing numbers of young adults are being diagnosed with cancer. Dr Kubes suggested numerous elements of contemporary existence may be contributing factors. Risk factors for cancer that are common in modern life:
- Sedentary lifestyles
- Poor diet
- Obesity
- Environmental pollutants
- Smoking
- Alcohol
