Train Ticket Rules: Indian Railways is called the lifeline of the country. Millions of people travel by train every day, but sometimes, due to haste, mistakes in ticket booking, or lack of information, passengers are caught without a valid ticket and panic upon seeing the TTE (Ticket Collector). However, every passenger has certain rights that you should be aware of.
What can a TTE do if a passenger is caught without a ticket?
According to railway rules, if a passenger does not have a ticket or has an incorrect ticket, the TTE cannot scold or reprimand them. The TTE issues a valid ticket to the passenger after collecting the prescribed fare and penalty. It is the passenger's right to obtain a receipt for this entire process. Remember, paying money without a receipt is not advisable.
How should a TTE behave?
A TTE must maintain a calm and respectful demeanor at all times. They cannot threaten or intimidate any passenger. In the case of women, senior citizens, and sick passengers, the TTE needs to be even more sensitive. They cannot make any decisions arbitrarily or charge excessive amounts.
Rules for those traveling on waiting list tickets
If a passenger is traveling in a sleeper or AC coach with a waiting list ticket and the seat is not confirmed, the TTE may ask them to move to the general coach.
Where to complain about misconduct?
If a passenger feels that the TTE has imposed an incorrect fine or behaved rudely, they can immediately register a complaint on the railway helpline number 139. Complaints can also be filed through the Rail Madad App. According to railway rules, a TTE cannot accept bribes or coerce any passenger.
