Sainsbury's is axing one of its services in 50 of stores across the UK. In the ever-changing retail landscape, supermarkets regularly change the way they do things to keep up with demand and stay relevant.
This was evident last year when Morrisons and Marks and Spencer closed in-store cafes due to changing customer behaviours. In its latest move to make things easier for customers, Sainsbury's has actually chopped one of the services that it launched ten years ago.
The British supermarket has got rid of its standalone delivery app, which is called Chop Chop. Launched back in 2016, the app was designed for quick deliveries on the same day. It was launched to rival the likes of Tesco's Whoosh service.
However, Chop Chop is no more, as Sainsbury's adds the quick-delivery service to its regular app. This means that the service will be used on the same app where people can access their Nectar Cards and review the points they have built up. The service promised to "get Sainsbury's groceries and everyday essentials delivered in minutes by one of our trusted delivery partners".
Shoppers could choose up to 30 items to be delivered in 60 minutes or less through the Chop Chop app. It involved a Sainsbury's staff member acting as your own personal shopper, and there was a £4.99 delivery and a minimum basket spend of £15.
However, the speedy delivery orders will now be made through Sainsbury's main app. This was done in an attempt to make shopping simpler for customers and to reduce the number of apps they need for various kinds of shopping at Sainsbury's.
Additionally, Sainsbury's works with delivery apps like Just Eat and Deliveroo for quick grocery deliveries across the UK. To get access to speedy delivery, Sainsbury's app users will need to update it to the latest version.
The app "officially decommissioned" over the weekend after close to a decade, reportsBirmingham Live.
"Chop Chop is dead. Long live Chop Chop," the supermarket's head of experience design, Jim Banks, said.
"Why? Well, because customers shouldn't have to think about which app to use. One place to do the weekly shop. One place to get groceries in as little as 60 minutes."
"Less friction. Less mental load. More getting on with life," he added. "This is a big step forward in simplifying our ecosystem, making shopping feel easier, calmer, and more human."
Sainsbury's website reads: "Pack your basket with fresh food and cupboard essentials. We'll pick your shopping. Your own personal shopper will build your basket.
"Arrives within 60 minutes. One of our friendly couriers will pop your shop straight to your door."
