Molestation – A disturbing case of alleged harassment during a Mumbai suburban train journey has prompted railway authorities to begin an investigation. The incident reportedly occurred between Dadar and Mulund stations when a woman travelling in a reserved ladies’ compartment noticed an elderly man in the adjoining coach behaving in an inappropriate manner. Acting on the complaint, railway police have registered a case and initiated efforts to locate the suspect using surveillance footage.

Incident Reported During Peak Train Journey
According to officials, the woman boarded a Thane-bound local train from Dadar station on Tuesday. She was seated in the ladies’ compartment while the adjoining section was designated for passengers with disabilities. During the journey, while she was occupied with her mobile phone, her attention was drawn toward the neighboring coach shortly before the train approached Mulund station.
The woman reported that she saw an elderly passenger standing inside the adjacent compartment who allegedly began making objectionable gestures directed at her. The behavior reportedly made her uncomfortable and led her to believe that the man was attempting to harass her during the journey.
Attempt to Confront the Accused
Police sources stated that once the train halted at Mulund station, the woman moved towards the adjoining compartment intending to question the man regarding his conduct. However, by the time she reached the area, the suspect had already stepped off the train and disappeared into the crowd at the station.
Unable to locate him at the spot, the woman continued her journey and later disembarked at Thane station, where she approached railway police officials. She then narrated the entire sequence of events and formally lodged a complaint.
Police Register Case and Begin Investigation
Taking the complaint seriously, railway police registered a case under relevant legal provisions related to insulting the modesty of a woman. Since the alleged incident took place between Dadar and Mulund stations, authorities later transferred the investigation to the Kurla Railway Police for further action.
Investigators have begun examining the details provided by the complainant and have collected CCTV footage from stations along the route. Officials are also reviewing surveillance recordings from entry and exit points, platforms, and surrounding areas to identify the suspect’s movements.
CCTV Footage Key to Identifying Suspect
Preliminary findings indicate that the accused individual is believed to have exited the train at Mulund station. Police suspect he managed to escape by blending into the heavy rush typically seen at the station during busy travel hours. Authorities are now analyzing visual evidence frame by frame in an effort to determine his identity.
Railway officials have stated that special teams are working on the case and are hopeful that the suspect will be traced soon. They have also urged passengers to promptly report any form of harassment or suspicious activity during train journeys to help authorities act swiftly.
Focus on Passenger Safety in Suburban Network
The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding passenger safety, particularly for women travelling on suburban railway routes. Mumbai’s local train network carries millions of commuters daily, making safety enforcement a constant challenge for authorities.
Railway police have reiterated their commitment to strengthening security measures, including enhanced surveillance, regular patrolling, and awareness campaigns encouraging passengers to report misconduct. Officials emphasized that strict action would be taken against anyone found guilty of harassment or inappropriate behavior in public transport.
