New Delhi, 5 February. The tension between India and America regarding the trade deal seems to be almost ending, but before this agreement was reached, relations between the two countries had become quite strained. The dispute over tariffs had escalated so much that India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval had given a strong message to the then Foreign Minister Marco Rubio during his visit to America. According to a Bloomberg report, during the meeting held in Washington a few months before the trade deal, Doval had clearly said that India is not afraid of President Donald Trump’s threats.
He had even said that if Trump remains adamant on the tariff dispute, India is ready to wait till the end of his term. Doval had also made it clear that India will not take any decision under pressure. He told Rubio that India wants to leave behind the growing bitterness between the two countries and restart talks, but criticism and pressure on public platforms will worsen relations instead of improving them. According to the report, Doval had urged the American side to reduce rhetoric if relations have to be brought back on track.
The meeting reportedly took place in early September, soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the top leadership of Russia and China. Now, several months after that meeting, President Donald Trump has announced a new trade deal with lower tariffs and increased market access. India has also confirmed its share of tariff reductions, although no formal commitments have emerged on things like Russian oil purchases or zero tariffs on American products.
Welcoming this agreement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on social media platform At the same time, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has also described this agreement as a “win-win deal” for both the countries. Overall, after a tough approach and long negotiations, an agreement has been reached on the India-US trade deal, which has reduced the tension between the two countries to a great extent.
