New Delhi, 5 February. The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the motion of thanks on the President’s address by voice vote amid uproar by opposition members. Immediately after this, the proceedings of the House were adjourned till 2 pm. There is a tradition of the Prime Minister replying in the House to the discussion on the motion of thanks, but amid the deadlock, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reply was not made in the Lok Sabha and the motion was passed. When the meeting started at 12 noon after one adjournment due to sloganeering by opposition members on various issues, Chairman Om Birla presented the necessary documents.

He asked the opposition MPs protesting near the Asan not to show the banners. Amidst the noise, he placed before the House for passing the motion of thanks brought in the Lower House on the address given by President Draupadi Murmu in the joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on January 28. Amidst the uproar, the assembly passed the resolution by voice vote. After the motion of thanks at 12.05 pm, the House meeting was adjourned till 2 pm. The motion of thanks on the President’s address was moved in the House by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday and while approving it, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya expressed his views.

After this, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, while participating in the discussion, tried to raise the issue of confrontation with China by quoting an unpublished memoir of former Army Chief MM Naravane, but Speaker Birla did not allow it citing rules. There was a deadlock in the House on this issue for the last four days. On Tuesday, during the uproar near the Asan, eight members of the opposition were suspended for throwing papers towards the Asan.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP GM Harish Balayogi and BJP MP Nishikant Dubey took part in the discussion on Wednesday. Referring to some books, Dubey targeted the Nehru-Gandhi family and made many allegations. Aasan did not allow Dubey to show or mention any book citing the rule. Opposition members created a ruckus over Dubey’s allegations.
