They Don't Want Singers to Be Bigger Than Films”: Abhijeet Sawant Speaks Out After Arijit Singh's Exit

After Arijit Singh decided to step away from playback singing, the true image of the industry is starting to appear. Abhijeet Sawant has frankly spoken about the exploitation of singers, the absence of royalties, and the restrictions of the system.

Not all that glitters is gold, and the Bollywood musicindustry is the perfect example. From the outside, there’s the glamour, the clapping, and the shouting of superhit songs, but beneath the surface, many singers are struggling with a system where hard work is underestimated, and exploitation is overgrown.

Arijit Singh, whose voice has become interchangeable with the entertainment and cinema industry over the past decade, surprised fans with his sudden statement that he would no longer be taking on any new playback assignments. Which raised questions that this decision is not simply a personal choice of a major singer; it points to the tension, pressure, and exhaustion that artists within this industry face daily.

Meanwhile, singer Abhijeet Sawant lifted the veil on a side of the music industry that is rarely discussed. In an interview, Abhijeet clearly stated that the film industry doesn’t want singers to become bigger than the films or the stars. This is why they are paid a fixed amount for recording a song, and after that, the singer receives no share of the profits generated by that song.

Abhijeet also pointed out the lack of a royalty system. He gave examples from abroad, where artists receive royalties for years, allowing them to live a distinguished life. In India, however, singers are paid a one-time fee for film songs, and that’s the end of the system. No royalties, no long-term security.

Most surprisingly, Abhijeet blamed not only the system but also the helplessness of the artists themselves for this exploitation. He said that many singers are willing to work for less money in the hope of being part of a big project or singing for a major star. They believe that one hit song will make their future, so they accept the terms. This desperation further strengthens the exploitative system.

The fact that an artist like Arijit Singh is stepping back from this system shows that if even the country’s biggest singer feels helpless, it’s not difficult to imagine the plight of new or less established singers. This entire issue isn’t just about money; it’s also about respect and mental health. When artists are constantly undervalued, their voices are merely “used,” and they receive neither security nor stability in return, fatigue and frustration are inevitable.

Arijit Singh’s decision and Abhijeet Sawant’s statements together raise a crucial question: Is the Indian music industry truly doing justice to its artists? Or are voices only heard as long as they are profitable?

Perhaps it’s time to stop merely applauding this system and start questioning it. Because if voices begin to fall silent today, tomorrow there will be nothing but emptiness left in the songs.
