Udupi: Following the successful operation of traffic signal systems at Kalsanka and Manipal’s Syndicate Circle, the police department is now moving to extend this to other parts of the district alongside Udupi city, with installations planned for a total of six locations.
In 2020-21, signal lights were proposed for 12 locations in Udupi city. However, due to the narrow nature of the city roads and the possibility of causing further issues, they were implemented in only two areas at that time. Those efforts are now being expanded. This time, signals will be installed at two locations in Udupi as well as in Padubidri, Brahmavar, Kota Moorkai, and Kundapura.
Lights have already been set up at Balayipade and Ambagilu junctions, with only a few poles remaining to be installed. The highway department has already been instructed to create crossing lines at Balayipade.
AI camera installation
The department intends to install AI (Artificial Intelligence) cameras at all circles where signal lights are placed. In this regard, the Central Government has released 5 crore rupees and the State Government has released 1.5 crore rupees to the district police department.
These cameras will properly verify vehicle number plates and provide high-quality images. Preparations are underway to monitor the CCTV feeds at the SP office. This will play a major role in investigating road accidents, tracking criminals, and detecting traffic rule violations.
Letter to remove old poles
The police department has already written to the City Municipality regarding the removal of large traffic signal poles previously installed in Udupi city. Since the municipality has not taken action, these poles are obstructing vehicle movement, including free left turns. In several places, these poles have been placed horizontally by the roadside, causing problems for pedestrians.
What should happen at free lefts?
Since buses stop at the bus stand near Kalsanka junction, vehicles traveling from the city to Manipal and those coming from Gundibail via the free left are forced to wait unnecessarily. Moving this bus stand slightly forward could help avoid congestion at the circle.
Awareness should be created initially for those who park vehicles in free left lanes, followed by the imposition of fines.
Installation of traffic cones.
Expansion of narrow spaces.
Development of free lefts
A free left lane on the route from Kalsanka to Gundibail will be constructed in a bridge-like model at a cost of approximately 49 lakh rupees. This will resolve the issues observed in this area. Similarly, a free left will be created near Manipal’s Syndicate Circle towards the DC office road at a cost of 12 lakh rupees. Municipal Commissioner Mahantesh Hangaragi stated that there is a plan to remove nearby slabs to expand the space further.
