The world is burning with one war after another. From Gaza to Ukraine, nuclear bombs are the trigger for all wars. In the midst of the possibility of nuclear war, the world’s two belligerents, America and Russia, are facing a nuclear arms race.
The last nuclear arms deal between Russia and the US expired on Thursday. For the first time in more than half a century, there was no limit on the nuclear arsenals of the two countries. Experts fear that the end of the New START treaty could set the stage for an open nuclear arms race.
However, last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was willing to accept the restrictions of the New Start agreement for one more year if Washington asked. But, US President Donald Trump has not shown much interest in this proposal. America demanded that China join this agreement. However, China ignored this proposal.
Russia has said that it has discussed this issue with China and America has not responded to their proposal. Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov said Russia will act in a balanced and responsible manner after thoroughly analyzing the security situation.
The New START treaty signed by former President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev in 2010 limited both sides to 700 missiles and bombers and 1,550 nuclear warheads. It was supposed to expire in 2021 but was extended for another five years.
