With prescription drug costs remaining a major concern for millions of Americans, the Trump administration is introducing a new online tool aimed at cutting prices. The website, called TrumpRx, is expected to go live Thursday evening after months of delays. The initiative is being framed as a key step in the president’s ongoing campaign to lower health care costs.

What is TrumpRx and how will it work?

TrumpRx is not designed as a traditional online pharmacy. Instead, the website will act as a facilitator, directing Americans to pharmaceutical companies’ direct-to-consumer websites where prescription drugs can be purchased, as per a report by ABC News.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced the site’s unveiling on X, describing it as “a state of the art website for Americans consumers to purchase low cost prescription drugs.” According to the administration, the goal is to simplify access to discounted prices negotiated directly with drug manufacturers.

President Trump is expected to formally announce the launch alongside Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz and Joe Gebbia, director of Trump’s National Design Studio.

Why is the administration launching TrumpRx now?

The website comes as health care costs and overall living expenses remain a top concern for voters. Trump first teased the idea of TrumpRx in September while announcing the first of more than 15 agreements with pharmaceutical companies aimed at lowering U.S. drug prices to match the lowest prices offered in other developed countries.

In December, Trump said the site would offer “massive discounts to all consumers,” though the administration has acknowledged it is unclear whether prices on manufacturers’ websites will always beat what insured patients already pay.

What caused the delays and what’s included?

TrumpRx’s rollout follows several delays that the administration has not publicly explained. Last fall, Oz indicated the site would be live before the end of the year. A planned January launch was also postponed.

The website is part of a broader strategy that includes deals with major pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer, Eli Lilly and Merck. Under these agreements, companies have committed to lowering Medicaid drug prices using “most favored nations” pricing. Many new drugs are also expected to launch at discounted consumer rates through TrumpRx.

How does this fit into Trump’s drug pricing strategy?

The administration has also negotiated lower prices for several drugs used by Medicare enrollees through a direct negotiation program created by a 2022 law. However, many details of the pharmaceutical agreements remain unclear, and patient costs can still vary based on insurance coverage and market competition.
