Afforestation – The Delhi Forest Department is gearing up for an extensive tree and shrub plantation programme across the national capital as part of its Green Action Plan (GAP) for 2026–27. The initiative aims to expand and strengthen green cover in the city by planting and maintaining more than 7.19 lakh saplings across key forest ranges in south and west Delhi. The overall expenditure for the project is expected to exceed Rs 56.46 crore, reflecting the scale and long-term intent of the effort.

Large-Scale Plantation Across Multiple Forest Ranges

According to official plans, the plantation drive will be carried out across various identified sites under the South and West forest divisions. The proposal includes raising approximately 3.22 lakh trees and nearly 3.96 lakh shrubs in carefully selected locations. These areas have been chosen to support ecological restoration, improve biodiversity, and enhance the city’s environmental resilience.

Forest department officials said that native species with longer life spans will be prioritised to improve survival rates and ensure sustained environmental benefits. The plantations will not be limited to planting alone, as maintenance over multiple years forms a core part of the programme.

Tenders Issued for Plantation and Maintenance Work

To implement the plan, the department has floated several tenders covering plantation, upkeep, and protective measures. These tenders also include the installation of fencing around plantation sites to safeguard young saplings from grazing, encroachment, and accidental damage.

Officials indicated that groundwork for the plantations will begin once the tendering process is completed and contracts are awarded. The phased execution is intended to align with seasonal planting cycles, which are crucial for sapling survival in Delhi’s climate.

Major Projects Under South Forest Division

One of the largest proposed plantation sites under the South Forest Division is at Maidan Garhi. The plan for this area includes planting around 71,000 trees along with 76,000 shrubs during the 2026–27 period. The estimated cost of this project is Rs 10.28 crore, which also covers fencing and maintenance expenses.

Another significant project under the same division focuses on land at Dera. Here, the department plans to raise 55,500 trees and 60,000 shrubs. The total cost for this plantation effort is estimated at Rs 10.37 crore, reflecting both planting and post-plantation care requirements.

Extensive Coverage in Tughlakabad, Devli, and Bhatti

A separate tender has been issued for plantation work across Tughlakabad, Devli, and Bhatti areas. This proposal involves planting approximately 80,000 trees and 86,500 shrubs at a cost exceeding Rs 13.13 crore. Among these locations, Bhatti is set to receive the largest share of saplings due to its size and ecological potential.

Officials noted that these areas play a critical role in strengthening green buffers and supporting wildlife habitats, particularly along the city’s southern ridge zones.

Focus on Long-Term Environmental Impact

The Green Action Plan places strong emphasis on sustainability rather than short-term outcomes. By combining plantation with structured maintenance and protective fencing, the department aims to improve sapling survival rates, which have historically been a challenge in urban forestry projects.

Once implemented, the initiative is expected to contribute to improved air quality, soil conservation, and climate resilience across the targeted regions. The department views the project as a key step toward meeting Delhi’s broader environmental and green cover goals over the coming decade.
