Central Government’s Sovereign Multilingual Artificial Intelligence (AI) Project ‘BharatGen’ is progressing rapidly and it is expected to complete text-based (text) services in 22 Indian languages by the end of this month, informed Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh gave in the Rajya Sabha. ‘BharatGen’, a government initiative launched in October 2024, aims to develop an indigenous and secure AI model for the country. Minister Singh said that the development of BharatGen AI is a continuous process and more languages and dialects can be added in the future.

Work has been completed in 15 languages and ‘Speech’ (Speaking) and ‘Vision’ (Seeing) modules will also be available in these 15 languages.The project will provide state-of-the-art services like Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and Text-to-Speech (TTS) for Indian languages. The ‘BharatGen’ initiative is being implemented through 25 Technology Innovation Hubs (TIHs), four of which have been upgraded into Technology Translational Research Parks (TTRPs). Data sharing will be subject to certain terms and conditions, and the service is also being considered at a discounted rate. Underscoring the importance of GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) in AI development, Mantri Singh explained that large AI models may require thousands of GPUs. Availability of computing resources is being provided under the ‘India AI’ mission. Opportunities have also been given to the private sector for financing and more investment is being encouraged.

Currently, BharatGen has the capability to execute AI services in 15 Indian languages including Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Maithili, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil and Telugu.
