The case of death of a youth due to falling into a pit in Delhi is increasing. Taking action in this matter, Delhi government has suspended three engineers. The incident took place in West Delhi’s Janakpuri area, where a deep pothole dug on the road during Delhi Jal Board (DJB) work became the cause of death. Now after the pictures went viral on social media, Delhi government has suspended three engineers in this case.
The incident occurred around 7 am on Friday morning when the police received information that a bike rider had fallen into a pit near Green Valley Apartment, on Joginder Singh Marg, Janakpuri. When the police reached the spot, they saw that 25 year old youth Kamal Dhyani was lying down in the pit with his Apache RTR 200 bike. He was wearing a helmet, riding jacket and gloves, but due to the deep fall, he suffered serious injuries which led to his death.
used to work in a call center
Kamal used to work in the call center of HDFC Bank in Rohini Sector 10. He was returning home from work at night. The family says that he had talked on the phone at around 11:30 pm and said that he would reach home in 15 minutes. But he did not reach home. The family said that there was no barricading, warning board or lights at the pit at night. Green net was installed only after the accident in the morning. The family is considering it not just an accident but negligence and is holding Delhi Jal Board responsible.
This pit was dug under the ‘Janakpuri Line Rehabilitation Project’ of Delhi Jal Board. This project is the repair or replacement of old water pipelines. A big pit was dug on the road, which is said to be about 25 feet deep. The biker could not see it in the darkness of the night and fell straight into it.
Kejriwal made allegations
Aam Aadmi Party councilor Raminder Kaur said that the pit was dug by PWD and there was no barricading in it. He said that there was a lot of darkness in that area and work was going on continuously for the last eight months and no security arrangements were made.
While posting on social media, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal wrote that this is not an accident, but murder.
He wrote, ‘BJP did not learn anything from the Noida incident. Gross negligence and irresponsible attitude has now become the hallmark of BJP governments, the common public is bearing the brunt of it. May God give strength to the family who lost their child due to the negligence of the government.
government action
Delhi government has adopted a strict stance on this incident. Delhi Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said that after preliminary investigation, three engineers have been suspended. These include an Executive Engineer (EE), an Assistant Engineer (AE) and a Junior Engineer (JE). All three were to Janakpuri Line Rehabilitation Project area.
The minister said, ‘This is just an initial action. A high-level committee has been formed to thoroughly investigate the accident. This committee will inspect the incident site, see the security arrangements, check compliance with the rules and hold those responsible for negligence. Based on the investigation, further strict action will be taken.
Police have also registered a case and are investigating whether the site had barricades, warning signs and lights at night. Some reports say the area was properly cordoned off, but family and witnesses say otherwise.
people showed anger
This accident is another example of negligence on road safety and construction sites in Delhi. Pictures are going viral on social media, in which the bike and the youth are seen under the pit. People are asking why there is no monitoring at construction sites at night? Why do contractors and engineers ignore the rules?
In recent times, many such cases have come to light, where people got injured or died after falling into pits or open drains. Even after the drowning incident of a tech engineer in Noida, people were raising questions. Now this incident in Janakpuri is again raising questions that why lives have to be paid in the name of development in the city?
Government ordered investigation
Delhi government has ordered an inquiry, engineers have been suspended, but the real question is whether this will prevent such incidents in future? Strict rules should be implemented during construction works. Lights, barricades, warning boards and sign boards should be necessary at night. Contractors should be monitored and immediate action should be taken against negligence.
The family is now demanding justice. Kamal’s father said, ‘My son was returning home, but due to negligence he lost his life.’
