Danone has recalled several batches of Aptamil and Cow & Gate infant formula because of the possible presence of a toxin linked to the poisoning of children, the Food Standards Agency said. The latest recall is an extension to the Aptamil First Infant Formula product recall issued on January 23 this year.
The concern centres on the potential presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus, in the affected products. Cereulide is extremely heatstable, meaning it is unlikely to be destroyed during cooking or when preparing infant formula according to NHS guidance, and ingestion can trigger symptoms very quickly. Illness caused by this toxin typically involves sudden nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps, the agency explained.
