Unique experiment of Gandhi Talks
‘Gandhi Talks’ Tells the story of two different life-lines. On one hand, there is the character of Vijay Sethupathi, who is an ordinary man, whose life is full of struggle, humiliation and perseverance. On the other hand, there is the character of Arvind Swamy, who has come from the world of power and money, but gradually falls into the structure of his own making. There is no dialogue between these two, yet the entire film is full of conflicts.
Recently released silent film ‘Gandhi Talks’ Let’s discuss. This film is a unique experiment in Indian cinema, where despite the lack of dialogues, emotions and thoughts are deeply expressed. The writer and director of this film is Kishore Pandurang Belekar.
Dialogues are considered an important medium of storytelling in Indian cinema. When a film is dialogueless, it is no longer just an experiment, but challenges the definition of cinema.
Kamal Haasan’s 1987 ‘Pushpak’ had also shown similar courage. Nearly four decades later, ‘Gandhi Talks’ Combines the same silent tradition with the soul of contemporary India. This is a sign that perhaps our time is ready to listen to silence again.
‘Pushpak’ crossed the boundaries of language and culture. There itself, ‘Gandhi Talks’ The city of is obviously Mumbai, but it is not the Mumbai that is glitzy or romantic. This is the Mumbai where footpaths, local trains and slums collide with each other.
The conflict between music and silence is also important in this film. In the absence of communication, the role of music increases, which gives direction to emotions. However, in some places too much music can dilute the silence.
Is this film for everyone? To be honest, no. The film demands patience from viewers who associate cinema with fast cuts and dialogue. This film is felt rather than seen.
There is a gap of almost four decades between ‘Gandhi Talks’ and ‘Pushpak’, but both are connected by an invisible bridge. While ‘Pushpak’ was a satire, ‘Gandhi Talks’ is a question.
Today when there is noise everywhere, ‘Gandhi Talks’ Comes like an adventurous pause. This film reminds us that cinema is not only the art of speaking, but also the art of seeing and hearing.
Perhaps this is the reason why this film does not end even after its completion. Its silence continues to resonate within us for a long time. Perhaps, somewhere in this silence, ‘Gandhi’ Still talking.
This film is available in a theater near you. Don’t forget to watch. (Pankaj Dubey Pop culture storyteller, novelist and famous YouTube chat show ‘Small Towns Big Stories’ Is the host of.)
