Good Morning Britain is in desperate need of a presenter shake-up, and this week's explosive news round-up has really shown their weaknesses. This ITV breakfast show has been a mainstay on the channel since it launched back in 2014. And over the years, we've seen many presenters come and go, with the most recent being Piers Morgan's explosive walkout back in 2021.
But this week has really revealed where the show needs to improve as a whole - and it starts with the presenters. The fallout from the latest Epstein documents has sent waves across the world and has brought the eyes of the nation back to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, Lord Peter Mandelson, and Sir Keir Starmer.
With it being the most talked-about story in the news, Brits have been glued to their screens to catch the latest updates coming in from London and Washington. But with so many strong opinions on the case, GMB appears to have lost some of their objectivity when conducting interviews with bigwigs on the show.
This week, we saw Susanna Reid and Ed Balls return to the helm, where they quizzed several Labour politicians about why more wasn't done to remove Mandelson before the extent of his friendship with Epstein was revealed.
But there was one glaring error in the broadcaster's coverage of the story: having Ed Balls deliver the news. The former Labour politician served as a senior Cabinet minister under Gordon Brown throughout the noughties alongside Mandelson.
Surely, we should be interviewing him about how the Labour Party kept bringing him back into government despite his countless scandals throughout his career. It feels hypocritical to have him grill politicians on the explosive scandal, considering his extensive working relationship with the disgraced former Business Secretary.
That's not to mention the countless times he has presented the show while his wife, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, was being interviewed on it moments later. ITV's poor workaround is to have him leave the set while she is grilled by his co-host for 10 minutes to avoid bias.
It shows a real lack of impartiality in some of the most important stories dominating the headlines, which will directly affect Brits up and down the country. But he's not the only host who needs to check themselves before stepping into the hot seat.
On Friday's instalment (February 6), Kate Garraway and Ranvir Singh took over hosting duties, where they shared the latest developments on the case coming from across the pond. During the show, they welcomed Labour MP Mike Tapp onto the show, where Kate made her frustrations with the government clear.
Throughout the heated debate, she constantly interrupted and talked over him, something she has become known for in recent years. Personally, I found it hard to focus on what he was actually saying because she kept sighing or interrupting him during the entire debate.
But like Ed Balls, she also has a close link to Mandelson. The broadcaster was snapped attending his wedding with her late husband, Derek Draper, back in 2023. Not only that, Draper and Mandelson worked together in the 1990s under Tony Blair.
After revamping their studio and adding more funding to the show with extended show times, it's about time ITV bosses invest in presenters with less bias. As viewers, we deserve impartial objectivity on political issues which greatly affect our future.
