The landfill sites of Bhalswa, Ghazipur and Okhla in the capital Delhi have long been posing a major challenge to the environment and health in the form of mountains of garbage. Now Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has given a big statement regarding their abolition. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that the government is working very seriously to eliminate the mountains of garbage in Okhla and Bhalswa. He expressed confidence that by the end of this year the legacy waste accumulated at these two landfill sites will be completely eliminated.
The Chief Minister said that the work is being progressed rapidly through technologies like scientific disposal of waste, bio-mining and bio-remediation. The government aims not only to remove garbage but also to transform these areas into green and useful places in the future. Delhi government believes that removing mountains of garbage will not only reduce pollution, but millions of people living nearby will also get relief from bad smell, poisonous gases and health problems.
What said on Okhla and Bhalswa landfill sites
Legacy waste is that waste which has been accumulating in dumping grounds for years and which has not been processed for a long time. Along with soil, plastic, polythene, glass, metal and other solid wastes are mixed in it. Over time, this waste takes the form of a mountain, causing pollution, bad smell and serious health problems. The Chief Minister said that the work of disposal of legacy waste at Okhla and Bhalswa landfill sites is going on in full swing. For this, modern technologies like bio-mining and scientific waste processing are being used.
What was said on Ghazipur landfill site
Along with expressing confidence in eliminating the legacy waste accumulated at Okhla and Bhalswa landfill sites by the end of 2026, the Chief Minister also clarified the situation regarding the Ghazipur landfill site. The Chief Minister said that it may take two more years to completely eliminate the mountain of garbage in Ghazipur. However, he also clarified that the necessary infrastructure is being rapidly created for 100 percent processing of the waste generated daily in Delhi. For this, new waste processing plants are being built and the capacity of existing plants is being increased.
We started the first biogas plant
Referring to the biotreatment plant, CM Rekha said that the waste management plant that processes 200 tonnes of cow dung has already become operational. Besides this, another biogas/waste processing plant with 400 tonne capacity will be commissioned by the end of this year. He said that through these plants, not only will there be scientific disposal of waste, but it will also help in energy production and pollution control. The government’s focus is to ensure that maximum portion of the waste generated in Delhi is processed there and the burden on landfill sites does not increase.
AAP And attack on Congress governments
On this issue, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also raised questions on the governments of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress era. He said that despite ruling Delhi for years, these governments did not take waste management seriously, due to which today the city has to face the problem of mountains of garbage. According to the Chief Minister, the present government is doing concrete and visible work on the ground to find a permanent solution to this problem.
