Indian Railways, known as the lifeline of the country, has undergone a major transformation in the last ten years. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, while giving information in the Rajya Sabha, stated that the Railways is now not only able to meet its expenses but also has a revenue surplus at the end of the year. This change has not only strengthened the Railways' financial position but has also brought new employment opportunities for millions of youth.

The Railway Minister stated that the Railways' operating ratio in the financial year 2024-25 was 98.22 percent. This means that the Railways is now able to better control its expenses. During this period, the Railways' gross traffic revenue exceeded ₹265,000 crore, and a surplus of approximately ₹2,660 crore was recorded. This situation is significantly different from a decade ago, when the Railways struggled to even meet its expenses.

Over 5 Lakh Jobs in the Last 10 Years

The Railway Minister informed the House that between 2014 and 2024, approximately 5.04 lakh youth were provided jobs in the Railways. These include various positions such as track maintenance, loco pilots, technicians, clerks, engineers, and Group D. This number shows that the Railways remains one of the largest employers in the country.

Preparations for 1.5 Lakh New Recruitments in the Third Term

The process of creating 1.5 lakh more jobs in the Railways is underway in the third term of the Modi government. According to the Minister, the examination and selection process for many recruitments has been completed, while notifications for several positions are expected soon. This is considered a major opportunity for youth, especially those preparing for government jobs.

Cost Control Opens the Way to Jobs

The Railways has also paid special attention to cost reduction. Energy costs have been saved by approximately ₹5,500 crore. Diesel and electricity expenditure has decreased compared to four years ago. Improved maintenance and the use of modern technology have reduced costs, paving the way for new projects and recruitment.

Recruitment Process and Student Convenience

The Railways has completed the recruitment process for 18,000 Assistant Loco Pilot positions and appointments have begun. The Railways has also set up a special 'war room' to address student complaints during examinations, ensuring prompt resolution of issues related to examination centers and the selection process.

Regional Projects to Increase Employment

The railway budget for the northeastern states has been increased to ₹11,486 crore. This will lead to the launch of new lines, stations, and projects, providing employment to local youth. New rail projects in states like Punjab, Kerala, Telangana and Jammu and Kashmir are also expected to increase job opportunities in the coming times.
