Udupi: District Collector Swaroopa T.K. has directed officials to give top priority to safety while ensuring that all basic facilities are provided to tourists visiting the district.
Chairing a meeting of the District Tourism Development Committee at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, she said that the Nirmiti Kendra has presented the blueprint and cost estimates for the proposed development works at Malpe Beach. The plan includes acquiring land on the northern side of the existing beach and undertaking zone-wise development. Development works are also planned at St Mary’s Island, subject to availability of funds.
The Deputy Commissioner instructed that tourists travelling by boat must wear life jackets without fail. Fines will be imposed on those who do not comply. Boat operators have been told to operate services only if passengers wear life jackets. The Coastal Security Police have been directed to conduct regular inspections.
To improve safety measures at Malpe Beach and St Mary’s Island, officials were asked to install watchtowers, information boards, public notice boards and warning signs. The DC also instructed that the maintenance, comprehensive development and water sports activities at Kadike village beach in Udupi taluk, along with passenger boat services to St Mary’s Island, should be awarded through a tender process based on percentage sharing. Shops, cleanliness and maintenance at Malpe Beach and the seawalk area should also be finalised through tenders.
MLA Yashpal A. Suvarna said that development works at Malpe Beach should not affect the livelihood and traditional fishing activities of local fishermen.
MLA Kiran Kumar Kodgi suggested that facilities such as a park, benches for sea viewing and other amenities be provided at the seawalk in Kodi beach, Kundapur, for the convenience of tourists. He said that if full development cannot be undertaken by the government alone, it may be carried out through private participation.
Zilla Panchayat CEO Prateek Boyel, SP Hariram Shankar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Abid Gadyal and other officials were present.
