New Delhi: The echo of the Under-19 World Cup final played at Harare Sports Club has not stopped yet. His explosive innings of 175 runs in 80 balls against England brought Vaibhav Suryavanshi into the limelight overnight. This innings, studded with 15 sixes, not only changed the course of the match but also raised a question in the minds of cricket lovers – when this 14-year-old player can destroy the best young bowlers in the world, then why is he not playing in the Indian senior team?
Rule keeping away from senior team
The International Cricket Council (ICC) had implemented a minimum age rule in 2020. According to this, no player can play international cricket before the age of 15 years. This rule has been made keeping in mind the physical and mental balance of young players. Vaibhav Suryavanshi was born on 27 March 2011. At the time of World Cup victory in February 2026, he was still 14 years old. This clearly means that until he turns 15, his selection in the Indian senior team is not possible.
Will not be able to play even in Under-19 now
Interestingly, Vaibhav will no longer be available even for the Under-19 team. According to BCCI’s “one-tournament” policy, a player can play the Under-19 World Cup only once. Its purpose is to give opportunity to new talents. Even though his age will be less than 19 years in 2028 or 2030, he will not be able to participate in this tournament again. That means at present the path for him is limited to domestic and franchise cricket.
flurry of records
The records that Vaibhav has made in the last one year seem no less than a dream. Recorded the highest individual score of 175 runs in the Under-19 World Cup final. Created a new record by hitting 30 sixes in the entire tournament. Became the youngest player to score a century in List-A cricket.
Broke the world record by scoring 150 runs in just 59 balls in Vijay Hazare Trophy. He achieved this feat at the youngest age by scoring a century in 35 balls in IPL. Scored a T20 century in 32 balls for India A. Youth made the record of fastest century in both ODI and Test. He became the youngest person to score a century in domestic T20. These achievements have made him the new rising star of Indian cricket.
waiting time
At present ‘Suryavanshi Toofan’ is limited to domestic cricket and IPL. But as soon as March 27, 2026 comes and he turns 15, a new chapter can begin in Indian cricket. However, considering India’s busy international schedule and his current form, it would not be wrong to say that the blue jersey is not far away from him.
