NEETCase – A day after the arrest of Purnea Member of Parliament Rajesh Ranjan, widely known as Pappu Yadav, senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra intensified their criticism of the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government in Bihar. The opposition leaders alleged that serious irregularities have surfaced in the handling of the recent death of a NEET aspirant in Patna, raising broader concerns about accountability within the state administration.

Opposition Raises Questions on Investigation
In a message posted on social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi said the circumstances surrounding the young student’s death and the subsequent probe have exposed what he described as systemic failures. According to him, the response of the state machinery has followed a troubling pattern whenever families seek an independent and transparent investigation.
He alleged that instead of ensuring justice, authorities attempted to deflect attention and exert pressure on those demanding answers. Gandhi also defended Pappu Yadav, stating that the MP had been consistently advocating for a fair inquiry and standing by the victim’s family. He described the arrest as politically motivated and aimed at discouraging voices seeking accountability.
Gandhi further claimed that the episode may reflect a larger and more concerning trend. He suggested that incidents involving young women require greater sensitivity and institutional responsibility, adding that justice should remain the primary focus rather than political considerations.
Priyanka Gandhi Links Case to Wider Concerns
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also issued a strong response, calling the reported rape and murder of the NEET aspirant in a Patna hostel deeply disturbing. She questioned the transparency of the process, from the filing of the First Information Report to the course of the investigation.
Drawing comparisons with past high-profile cases such as the Hathras and Unnao incidents, as well as the Ankita Bhandari case, she argued that public confidence weakens when procedural clarity is lacking. She said the arrest of a sitting MP who had publicly raised concerns only intensified suspicion and raised questions about priorities within the administration.
The Bihar government has not publicly responded in detail to the latest remarks but has maintained that legal procedures are being followed.
Arrest in Three-Decade-Old Case Sparks Tension
Pappu Yadav was taken into custody late Friday night from his residence in Mandiri, Patna. The arrest followed an order issued by a Special MP-MLA court in connection with a 31-year-old case. The case reportedly relates to allegations of fraudulent house renting and criminal intimidation involving Yadav and two others.
Police officials stated that the court had directed the attachment of properties belonging to the accused after due legal process. During the arrest, supporters of the MP gathered outside his residence, leading to brief scuffles with law enforcement personnel. The situation was later brought under control.
Developments in NEET Aspirant Death Case
The arrest comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the investigation into the NEET aspirant’s death. Pappu Yadav had been actively visiting the victim’s family in Jehanabad and publicly questioning the progress of the police probe.
The Bihar Police had earlier formed a Special Investigation Team supervised by an officer of Inspector General rank. However, as the case remained unresolved, it was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The central agency has yet to formally begin its on-ground investigation in Bihar.
Family members of the deceased have alleged sustained pressure and expressed dissatisfaction with the state’s response. They have met senior officials, including Bihar Director General of Police Vinay Kumar and Home Minister Samrat Choudhary, but maintain that significant questions remain unanswered.
According to the Forensic Science Laboratory report and post-mortem findings, sexual assault cannot be ruled out. The FSL examination reportedly confirmed the presence of semen on the victim’s undergarments, intensifying demands for a comprehensive and impartial investigation.
As the political debate deepens, the focus remains on ensuring due process, transparency, and justice in a case that has drawn national attention.
