Tezzbuzz Desk- An important achievement has emerged for India’s semiconductor ecosystem. Union IT and Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Saturday unveiled the chip based on 2-nanometer technology developed by Qualcomm. On this occasion, the government made it clear that India is no longer limited to just back-office services, but is rapidly moving towards becoming an end-to-end chip development hub.
India’s technology capability showcased with 2nm chip
Presenting the high-end chip wafer based on 2-nanometer technology, the Union Minister said that it is a great example of ultra-advanced manufacturing. There are about 20 to 30 billion transistors installed in this wafer. Each tiny die contains approximately 20 billion transistors.
Preparing a chip on such a precise technology is considered extremely complex. This chip integrates both CPU and GPU on a single platform, highlighting the high level of India’s chip design capability.
2nm chip will be used in AI and edge devices
According to the Union Minister, the module prepared from this chip can become a kind of AI computer. It can be used on platforms like desktop systems, edge devices, cameras and Wi-Fi routers, automobiles, trains and aircraft. This will make AI processing possible directly at the device level, which will increase speed and reduce dependence on the cloud. This is considered an important step for advanced automation and smart machines.
Semiconductor talent force being prepared by Semicon India Mission
Under the government’s Semicon India Mission 1.0, a target was set to prepare 85 thousand semiconductor professionals in 10 years. Till now about 67 thousand engineers have been trained. Semiconductor design education has started in 315 colleges and universities of the country.
Students are being given access to advanced EDA tools and are designing their own chips. Tape-out and validation is also being done in the lab in Mohali. The minister said that such an integrated model is seen in very few countries in the world.
What will be new in Semicon India Mission 2.0?
The government is preparing to launch Semicon India Mission 2.0 soon, which has already been announced in the budget. In the new phase-
- First focus on chip design.
- After this, equipment and material manufacturing will be promoted.
- Developing system-level design talent.
- Fabrication and expansion of ATMP units.
At present, India is moving ahead on 28nm manufacturing capacity, which is targeted to be taken to 7nm in future. This entire roadmap will be finalized in the coming months.
India’s semiconductor ambitions get new momentum
The unveiling of 2nm chips and the Semicon 2.0 roadmap indicates that India is firmly making its place in the global semiconductor race. This step will not only increase technology self-reliance, but will also make India the global chip of the future. It will also prove important in the direction of creating a design and innovation hub.
