Melanin is a pigment that gives color to skin, hair and eyes. It is made by melanocyte cells, which are found in the outer layer of your skin. Actually, the number of melanocytes in all of us is almost the same. However, some people may have more melanin than others. Having excess melanin means the skin color is dark.
Sometimes melanin can accumulate in a particular area, causing hyperpigmentation in the skin. Obviously, none of us want our skin to become darker or pigmented. Sun protection is most important
Sunlight is the biggest reason for increasing melanin. Apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen 20–30 minutes before going out. Reapply every 2–3 hours. Hats, sunglasses and full sleeve clothing are helpful.

Vitamin C balances melanin production. Eat lemon, orange, amla, kiwi. If you want, use Vitamin C serum (on the advice of a dermatologist).

Dry skin can trigger excessive pigmentation. Apply mild moisturizer according to your skin type. Aloe vera gel is a good natural option.
light exfoliation
Removing dead skin cells makes the skin look brighter. No more than 1–2 times a week, avoid very harsh scrubs (this can adversely increase melanin).
eat right diet
The effect of what you eat is visible on the skin. Eat antioxidant-rich foods like berries, green tea, turmeric and drink plenty of water.
sleep and stress control
Less sleep and more stress cause hormonal changes, which can increase pigmentation. 7-8 hours of sleep every day makes a lot of difference.
Beware of chemical treatment
Do not use skin lightening cream or steroids without doctor’s advice. Due to this the skin can become darker.
