The UK's "most disruptive" roadworks have been revealed, with £10.6billion to be spent on one transport project alone. Van and car specialists, Leasing Options, compiled list of works which it said help Brits understand which parts of the country will be most affected by work on roads this year.
The company examined each scheme's average cost, aims and how drivers would be impacted. Projects include the Lower Thames Crossing, improvements on the A383 and the Kex Gill Bypass, described by Leasing Options as one of the most expensive and disruptive roadworks of 2026.
The Government spent £6.6bn on road maintenance in 2025 and is expected to spend the same amount on road maintenance this year, according to the vehicle leasing company.
The planned crossing of the Thames estuary will link the counties of Kent and Essex. Its route will connect the M25 motorway and A13 north of the Thames to the M2 south of the river.
When built, the crossing will be the longest road tunnel in the country at 2.6 miles long.
Since the project is expected to take several years, there are concerns that it will cause significant delays on the surrounding roads, such as the M25 and A2, according to Leasing Options.
However, the project aims to minimise disruption by maintaining running lanes during the day where possible, using temporary speed limits and narrow lanes.
The Missing Link refers to a 3.4 mile stretch of single-carriageway on the A417 between Brockworth bypass and Cowley.
The road breaks up a dual-carriageway strategic route connecting Gloucester with Swindon.
A new dual carriageway will connect the two existing dual carriageway sections and bring the route up to current trunk-road standards.
As the road runs through the Cotswolds, the scheme is designed to be landscape-led, with efforts to protect and enhance the local environment.
Currently, temporary speed limits of 40mph are being enforced to protect workers. Weekend closures on local roads have been a recurring problem for motorists, Leasing Options said.
The Kex Gill Bypass is a planned stretch of A-road across Kex Gill Moor to Blubberhouses in North Yorkshire.
Part of the A59 road across the Pennines between Preston and York, the route is in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
An upgrade is required as the 1820s-built bypass is prone to landslips and road cracking.
Leasing Options said while the rebuild has largely avoided road disruptions, there may be some closures or delays before the road is open to traffic.
Tarbock Island is a large roundabout where the M62, M57 and A5300 meet.
The road connects traffic between Liverpool, Manchester and surrounding areas.
Several changes are included in the upgrade, such as widening approaches to the roundabout to increase the number of lanes and enlarging parts of the roundabout itself.
Leasing Option said while some traffic restrictions and diversions are in place, drivers are advised to plan journeys and expect delays in and around Tarbock Island.
Leasing Options said improvements to the A382 are minor in comparison to others on the list, but the upgrades include improvements to local junctions and the completion of a link road.
The A382 is a main road in Devon, running from Newton Abbot northwards towards the A38 to Bovey Tracey and the A30.
Leasing Options said despite the improvements being "relatively minor", the upgrades have caused "significant" disruption.
Currently, the Whitehills junction area is closed and expected to remain so until the summer to allow for the construction of a new roundabout.
The Forches Cross to Stover is expected to close at the end of the year for junction upgrades and road widenings, according to Leasing Options.
