New snow maps have raised fresh winter warnings after forecasts showed heavy snow and blizzard conditions across large parts of the UK just weeks away, with up to 61cm on its way. The latest weather models from WXCharts show bands of snow spreading across the country as Brits prepare for the mercury to plummet.
Set to arrive on February 20,the snow is expected to develop during the early hours of the morning, slowly becoming heavier as the daylight arrives. By 6am, widespread snowfall across Scotland and northern England is the belt that moved eastward. While snowfall totals will vary, the maps suggest several UK cities could be badly affected, with blizzards possible when strong winds combine with heavy snow.
Forecasters warn this could lead to dangerous travel conditions, poor visibility and drifting snow in some areas.
The heaviest snowfall is shown across northern and higher ground in Scotland, where people could be snowed in under 61cm in the most at-risk locations.
Aberdeen and the surrounding area will bear the brunt of the snowfall, while the likes of Inverness and the Highlands will still be snowed under around 40cm of the white stuff.
Elsewhere, many towns and cities will be submerged by several centimetres of snow, with up to 20cm falling across much of Northern England.
The snow risk follows recent Met Office forecasts, which have warned that late February could still bring wintry weather, especially in the north, despite some milder spells at times.
In their long-range forecast, the agency predicted: "Predominantly cyclonic patterns are expected to dominate the UK.
"The early part of this period could see colder conditions becoming established more widely for a time, bringing with it the likelihood of some snow."
