Sports:There has been a new twist in the ongoing dispute between India and Pakistan regarding the T20 World Cup group match. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has now demanded formal talks with the International Cricket Council (ICC). Earlier, PCB had written a letter to ICC and announced its withdrawal from the match against India on February 15. This was based on the Pakistan government’s tweet calling it ‘extraordinary circumstances’.
ICC’s strict stance
Citing the government’s instructions, the PCB said that the team will not take the field against India, but will play the remaining matches. The decision was taken after Bangladesh pulled out of the tournament, which was replaced by Scotland after refusing to play in India. Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif called it solidarity with Bangladesh.
The ICC immediately responded and asked the PCB what are the extraordinary circumstances? Also clarified that withdrawing from the match may result in legal, financial and sports punishment. ICC said that selective participation is against the spirit of the global tournament. The broadcaster was warned of legal claims, cut in revenue share and other sanctions. The ICC stressed that the sanctity of the rules, fairness and the interests of all stakeholders (players, fans) are paramount.
now the way to communicate
In the latest update, PCB has taken the initiative to start further talks with ICC. According to sources, communication is going on between the two sides through back-channel and email. ICC deputy chair Imran Khawaja and other officials are in touch with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. ICC’s objective is to get the match done, because the India-Pakistan match is worth crores of rupees in media rights and the credibility of the tournament is at stake.
ICC had earlier also given priority to dialogue in cases like Bangladesh. Here too the emphasis is on following rules and resolving conflicts. PCB is claiming ‘Force Majeure’ clause, but ICC has challenged it as to how it is possible to leave one match and play the rest. Sri Lanka Cricket has also asked the PCB to reconsider, because cancellation of the match will cause financial loss.
What will happen next?
At present talks are going on. ICC will not compromise with the rules, but efforts are being made to organize the match. If an agreement is not reached, the PCB may face heavy fines, revenue deduction or other punishment. This controversy once again exposes the interference of politics in cricket. Fans are waiting for this high-voltage match, but political decisions can change everything. The ICC’s balanced approach shows that maintaining the integrity of global cricket is of paramount importance.
