Afghanistan vs New Zealand: New Zealand’s explosive batsman Glenn Phillips played a brilliant inning of 42 runs against Afghanistan on Sunday, surpassing former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum to become the third highest run-scorer for his country in T20I cricket.

The 29-year-old player has so far scored 2147 runs in 89 T20I matches at an average of 31.57 and a strike rate of around 142. Phillips left McCullum behind and took third place in this list. Phillips is now at third place behind former Kiwi opener Martin Guptill (3531 runs) and Kane Williamson (2575 runs).

New Zealand defeated Afghanistan by five wickets in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 group match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Chasing the difficult target of 183 runs, New Zealand’s batsmen performed brilliantly. Phillips’ innings included seven fours and a six, leading New Zealand to their victory against Afghanistan. The special thing is that with this victory, New Zealand also recorded its most successful run-chase in the history of T20 World Cup.

After the match, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said, “It was a great day. We knew from the beginning that Afghanistan were a big threat and they proved it. We needed to understand that this was a big game for us, and we played it the right way. It was a great performance and we are moving in the right direction.”

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan said after the match, “We would have liked it not to happen, but it is something we will learn from. There is a need to improve, especially in the bowling department. We had a good score, but the bowling after the powerplay needed improvement. We will fix that as we move forward.”

Earlier, Afghanistan won the toss and decided to bat first and posted a strong score of 182/6 with the help of Gulbadin Naib’s masterclass innings. However, despite a slow start, Afghanistan managed to settle into their rhythm and post a strong score, which was proving challenging for New Zealand.
