Moscow. A major attack has taken place in Russia’s capital, Moscow, raising serious questions about security. On Friday, an unknown assailant opened fire on Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeev, deputy head of Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU. Alexeev was seriously injured in the attack and has been admitted to a hospital.
According to Russian officials, General Alekseev was shot multiple times and is in critical condition. There has been no official confirmation yet on who was behind the attack. However, it is believed that this incident could once again impact potential peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
Ambush outside the house
According to preliminary information, the attack took place near a residential building in northwestern Moscow. The attacker was lying in wait and opened fire on General Alekseev as soon as he saw the opportunity. The suspect fled the scene after the attack.
Alexeyev was taken to the hospital immediately after the incident. Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched a criminal investigation, treating it as attempted murder. Who is Vladimir Alexeyev?
Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseev has been considered the second most powerful officer in the GRU since 2011. He has played a crucial role in Ukraine’s war strategy and planning of military operations. Ukraine views him as an international criminal, while he has also been involved in numerous controversies globally.
Facing US and European sanctions
Alekseev is accused by Britain and the European Union of masterminding the Novichok nerve agent attack on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, UK, in 2018. He is therefore subject to EU sanctions.
Apart from this, America had also imposed strict sanctions on him regarding alleged cyber interference and hacking campaigns in the 2016 US presidential election.
Questions raised on security system
Several high-profile military officials have been targeted in Russia in recent months. The attack on Alekseev exposes the weaknesses in Moscow’s internal security and intelligence apparatus and could have far-reaching political and military implications in the coming days.
