Increasing risk to liver health
New Delhi: The increasing incidence of liver diseases in the country is becoming a serious health problem. A recent study published in ‘Lancet Southeast Asia’ has presented shocking facts on this subject. The research, led by Dr. Shantanu Sengupta, included data from more than 7,000 individuals from 27 cities. The report states that fatty liver is now not only to alcohol consumption, but also unhealthy diet and obesity, which can further lead to liver cancer.
Analysis of fatty liver condition
Liver disease is commonly linked to alcohol consumption, but this study paints a different picture. Dr. Sengupta said that this study included individuals who did not consume alcohol, yet fatty liver was found in 40 percent. This shows that our changing lifestyle and non-alcohol factors are causing serious damage to the liver, now identified as fibrosis.
Fatty liver status in different cities of India
New map of fatty liver condition: The study has created a new map of fatty liver status in different cities of India. According to research, in Roorkee and Bhopal this rate has reached 50 percent, while in Thiruvananthapuram it is the lowest at 27 percent. In big cities like Delhi and Bengaluru, this figure is between 37 to 42 percent. Its rate among men is 45.9 percent, which is higher than that of women.
Relationship between obesity and diabetes
Fatty Liver and Health: Fatty liver problem has been found to be directly to weight and blood sugar imbalance. In research, it was seen that 93.7 percent of people suffering from fatty liver are obese. Additionally, the HbA1c level in these patients was higher than the normal 5.7, indicating that increased abdominal fat increases the risk of diabetes and the liver is its first victim. This is a warning to those who ignore fitness.
Increasing complication of fibrosis
Risk of Fibrosis: Fibrosis is the initial stage of liver damage, which can later lead to liver failure or cancer. The rate of fibrosis in patients with fatty liver was found to be 6.3 percent, which is higher than the general population. Jorhat recorded the highest rate of fibrosis at 8.3 percent. Its cases are also increasing rapidly in Delhi and Jammu. Diet and regional genetics play an important role in this.
Screening and prevention measures
Health Care: Since it is not possible for every person to undergo expensive tests like FibroScan, the team of researchers is developing a simple screening system. In this, potential patients will be identified using information like blood biomarkers, age and weight. According to Dr. Sengupta, this crisis can be avoided by timely testing and adopting a healthy lifestyle. Paying attention to liver health is no longer just an option but the biggest demand of our times.
