Tejaswin Shankar sets national record at Asian Indoor Athletics C’ships to win Heptathlon gold

India enjoyed a productive outing at the 2026 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships, highlighted by a gold medal and national record performance from Tejaswin Shankar in the men’s heptathlon, alongside record-breaking and podium finishes across events.

Tejaswin Shankar clinched the men’s heptathlon title after accumulating 5,993 points across the seven events, establishing a new championship record and a new national record for India. His consistent performances throughout the competition ensured a clear advantage over the field, marking a significant milestone in Indian combined-events athletics at the continental level.

High jumper Pooja Singh headlined the Indian contingent by breaking a 22-year-old indoor national record with a leap of 1.87 metres. With this, the youngster bagged a silver in the women’s high jump event.

Two-time defending champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor clinched the men’s shot put silver medal with a new Indoor National Record of 20.05m throw.

He lost the gold medal marginally to China’s Chen Chengyu, who threw 20.07m.

Earlier in the day, Ancy Sojan also claimed bronze in the women’s long jump final. Sojan registered a best effort of 6.21 metres to finish third, securing her first medal at these championships.

Personal bests boost India’s overall campaign

On the track, Moumita Mondal qualified for the women’s 60 metres hurdles final after clocking a personal best time of 8.34 seconds in the heats. The final is scheduled for later in the evening.

Meanwhile, Pragyan Sahu missed out on qualification after finishing fifth in her heat with a time of 8.46 seconds.

Shahnavaz Khan missed out on the men’s long jump podium, finishing 4th with the best of 7.70m.

With this, India ends its campaign at the 2026 Asian Indoor C’ships with 1G, 2S, 2B
