Ammunition – Police in Modinagar have registered a criminal case against a former Army serviceman after 42 cartridges of prohibited bore were recovered from his residence following a complaint filed by his wife, officials confirmed on Monday.

Complaint Leads to Recovery in Residential Colony
The recovery was made on Sunday at a house located in Radha Kunj Colony on Niwari Road. According to police sources, the action was initiated after Kavita, the wife of the accused, approached authorities and alleged that her husband had kept restricted ammunition at their home.
When officers reached the residence, Kavita reportedly handed over several cartridges. During the search, a box containing additional rounds of ammunition was also discovered inside the house. In total, 42 cartridges classified as prohibited bore were seized from the premises.
Law enforcement officials stated that the possession of such ammunition without authorization constitutes a serious offence under existing arms regulations.
Retired Army Personnel Identified
The accused has been identified as Adesh Kumar, a former member of the Jat Regiment who joined the Army in 1988. He retired from service in 2009 after more than two decades in uniform.
Police said that, based on the complaint, Kumar is suspected of having brought the cartridges home during his tenure in the armed forces. Authorities are now examining whether the ammunition was unlawfully removed from official stock during his service period.
A formal case has been registered against Kumar, and further legal action will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
Domestic Dispute Emerges as Background
Officials also revealed that the couple has been living separately for some time. According to police records, a domestic disagreement had surfaced between Kavita and Adesh a few years ago. Following the dispute, Kumar reportedly shifted to Meerut, where he has been residing with his sister.
Investigators are assessing whether the marital discord had any connection to the recent complaint or whether it was unrelated to the discovery of the ammunition.
While the cartridges were recovered from the Modinagar residence, Kumar was not present at the time of the search, police sources indicated.
Investigation Focuses on Source and Intent
Modinagar Additional Commissioner of Police Bhaskar Verma said the investigation is currently focused on determining how the ammunition came into the house and for what purpose it was allegedly kept.
According to Verma, clarity will emerge only after Kumar is questioned. “We need to verify whether he personally stored the cartridges at the residence or if someone else had any involvement,” the officer said.
Authorities are also examining service records and other relevant documents to establish whether any official inventory discrepancies were ever reported during Kumar’s tenure in the Army.
Legal Implications Under Arms Regulations
Possession of prohibited bore ammunition without valid authorization is treated as a punishable offence under Indian law. Police officials noted that strict action is mandated in such cases, particularly when the ammunition is suspected to have originated from official sources.
The seized cartridges have been sent for further examination as part of the investigation process. Forensic analysis may be conducted to determine their origin and whether they were part of any registered military consignment.
Officials emphasized that the case is at a preliminary stage and that conclusions will be drawn only after detailed questioning and verification.
The development has drawn attention in the Modinagar area, though authorities have urged residents not to speculate until the investigation is complete.
