Scammers lay such elaborate traps that even educated people easily fall into them and lose thousands or lakhs of rupees in an instant. A man living in Delhi received a fake link on WhatsApp to pay a traffic challan. Without thinking, he clicked on the unknown link. This small act of carelessness proved very costly for him, as he lost Rs 4 lakh due to this single mistake. Let's tell you how the scammers trapped this man.
How did the scammers lay the trap?
According to a Times of India report, the police said that the man received a message on WhatsApp from an unknown number, claiming that a traffic challan of Rs 1000 was pending. The message appeared to be from NextGen mParivahan and looked official, mentioning the transport department. It also used the tone and language typically used in government alerts, making it seem genuine.
The message contained a link asking him to check the challan details and pay the fine. Believing it to be real, the man clicked on the link and downloaded an app. However, after the app was installed, no challan details were displayed. At that time, the man did not suspect anything was wrong.
The trouble started a little later in the afternoon. Around 2:59 PM, he received an email alert stating that the password for his Amazon e-wallet had been changed. Within minutes, the email ID associated with the account was also changed without his authorization. Immediately after this, he started receiving SMS alerts from different banks about high-value credit card transactions.
Getting the money back became impossible, understand how?
In total, five transactions were made using his saved credit card details, none of which he had authorized. Police say the scammers used the card information to purchase e-gift cards from an online shopping platform. These gift cards were delivered digitally to the scammer's email address, making it virtually impossible to recover the money.
By the time the victim realized what had happened, they had already lost approximately ₹4.05 lakh. The individual then filed a complaint on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, and the police registered a case of fraud under the Indian Penal Code.
