Crime – A shocking incident of gun violence inside a private college in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district has left a young woman dead and a fellow student fighting for his life. The shooting took place on Monday morning inside a classroom in Usma village, sending shockwaves through the academic community and raising serious concerns about campus security.

Shooting Inside Classroom Leaves Student Dead
According to police officials, a first-year law student allegedly opened fire on his classmate while other students were present in the room. The victim, identified as 19-year-old Sandeep Kaur, died instantly after being shot in the head. The accused, Prince Raj, who was also in his first year of law studies and around the same age, then reportedly turned the weapon on himself.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagbir Singh confirmed that the incident occurred before the scheduled class had begun. “The student fired at his classmate inside the classroom, resulting in her death. He then shot himself,” the officer said.
Raj was rushed to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition, police added.
CCTV Footage Captures Moment of Attack
Preliminary investigation includes a review of CCTV footage from cameras installed on the college premises. The video reportedly shows Prince Raj seated in the classroom with Sandeep Kaur and another female student. A few other students were also present at the time.
The footage indicates that Raj suddenly stood up from his seat and fired at Sandeep without any visible altercation. Moments later, he shot himself and collapsed on the floor.
A fellow student sitting next to Sandeep was seen attempting to check on her condition. Within seconds of hearing the gunshots, other students entered the classroom but quickly retreated after witnessing the scene.
Family Informed After Tragedy
Sandeep’s mother, Harjinder Kaur, said she received a phone call from college authorities asking her to come to the campus immediately. She told reporters that she was not informed over the phone that her daughter had been shot.
“When I reached the college, I saw my daughter lying motionless,” she said, struggling to describe the moment.
The grieving mother also questioned how a student was able to bring a firearm onto the campus without being detected. Her concerns echo those of other parents and community members who are demanding answers regarding security arrangements at educational institutions.
Police Probe Focuses on Motive
Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to determine the motive behind the shooting. Police have not yet disclosed any specific reasons or background factors that may have led to the incident.
Both students were classmates in their first year of law studies. Prince Raj is a resident of Mallian village, while Sandeep Kaur belonged to Naushehra Pannuan village in Tarn Taran district.
Investigators are examining all possible angles, including personal disputes or other circumstances that may have contributed to the violence. Statements from students present during the incident are being recorded as part of the inquiry.
Questions Over Campus Safety
The incident has triggered renewed debate over safety measures in colleges and universities across the region. While Punjab has generally reported isolated cases of campus violence, the entry of a firearm into a classroom has intensified concerns among parents and faculty members.
Police officials have assured that a thorough investigation is underway and that appropriate legal action will follow based on the findings.
As the community mourns the loss of a young student, attention now turns to understanding what led to the tragic sequence of events and how similar incidents can be prevented in the future.
