The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is set to introduce a major digital upgrade for its members starting April 2026. A brand-new mobile application is expected to be launched that will allow employees to withdraw their Provident Fund (PF) money directly through UPI, making the process quicker, simpler, and more user-friendly. This initiative is likely to benefit nearly 8 crore EPFO members across the country.
At present, PF withdrawal is considered a time-consuming process, often involving multiple verification steps and delays. With the upcoming mobile app, EPFO aims to streamline services and bring them closer to the ease and efficiency offered by modern banking platforms. The Labour Ministry is actively overseeing the project, and internal trials are currently underway using dummy accounts to ensure the system is secure and error-free.
EPFO New App Likely to Go Live in AprilAccording to official sources, the new EPFO mobile app is scheduled for a nationwide rollout in April. Once launched, EPF subscribers will be able to check their eligible PF balance and transfer funds directly to their linked bank accounts using UPI. After the testing phase is completed and technical issues are resolved, the app will be made available to all members.
This move is expected to significantly reduce dependency on manual claim processing and long waiting periods, which have been a major concern for employees for years.
PF Withdrawal Through UPI: How It Will WorkUnder the new system, members will not require lengthy approvals to initiate withdrawals. After logging into the app, users will be able to view the amount available for withdrawal and transfer it instantly using their UPI PIN. Since EPFO does not hold a banking license, the transfer will be routed through a secure UPI gateway linked to the user’s bank account.
The use of UPI will ensure faster transactions, enhanced security, and reduced chances of errors, making PF withdrawals almost as simple as digital payments.
Existing EPFO Platforms Will ContinueEPFO has clarified that the current services offered through the UAN Member Portal and the UMANG app will continue without interruption. The upcoming mobile app will serve as an additional option, giving members more flexibility. Facilities like checking passbook balance, submitting claims, and tracking withdrawals will be consolidated for better digital convenience.
Earlier Relief Through Auto-SettlementBefore this app announcement, EPFO had already provided relief to members by increasing the auto-settlement limit to ₹5 lakh. Under this mechanism, PF claims related to medical emergencies, education, marriage, or housing are settled within three days. Introduced during the pandemic, this system now handles a significant portion of the nearly 5 crore claims processed by EPFO every year.
The new UPI-based app is expected to further reduce administrative pressure and improve service delivery.
Big Boost for Crores of EmployeesWith around 8 crore active members, EPFO’s new initiative marks a major step toward digitization. The government’s goal is to make EPFO services comparable to banking standards, and UPI-enabled PF withdrawal is seen as a crucial move in that direction. Once implemented, employees will no longer need to wait for weeks to access their own savings.
Members are advised to keep their UAN, Aadhaar, bank details, and mobile numbers updated to take full advantage of the new facility once it goes live.
