On Monday, February 9, 2026, a tragic shooting took place at Mai Bhago Law College in Usma village of Tarn Taran district of Punjab, where a first year law student reportedly shot himself after killing his female classmate. The incident, captured on CCTV footage from the classroom, has shocked the local community and raised concerns about campus security and personal disputes between students.
According to the police and reports by The Hindu, NDTV, Times of India and others, the accused, Prince Raj (also known as Prince Raj Singh), a resident of Mallian village in Jalandhar district, entered the classroom before the lecture began at around 9 am. In the CCTV footage, he is seen talking to Sandeep Kaur (or Sandeep Kaur, resident of Nowshera Pannuan) and another student for a while. He then stood up, took out a pistol from his bag, and shot Kaur in the head at close range, killing her instantly. Shortly afterwards he also shot himself in the head.
Kaur, around 19-20 years old, died on the spot in front of her frightened classmates. Prince Raj was seriously injured and was immediately taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries (some initial reports described him as critical, but later updates and family/community statements suggest he died). The pistol has been recovered from the spot.
Tarn Taran SSP Surendra Lamba and DSP Jagbir Singh confirmed these details and said that both were first year classmates. The motive is still not clear, and the police have started investigation. Speculation in reports (such as The Tribune, YouTube/Instagram sources) point to possible “unrequited love,” unrequited love, harassment, or personal animosity – Kaur’s family reportedly claimed that Raj had been harassing her for several days, and complaints had also been made to college authorities before. There has been no official confirmation regarding the motive, and the investigation is ongoing.
The incident has sparked anger over how the accused brought weapons to the campus without any restrictions, leading to demands for stricter security measures in educational institutions. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and police have sealed parts of the college. As Punjab grapples with the horrific campus incident – which coincided with the beginning of Valentine’s Week – officials are pushing for a thorough investigation to find out the root causes and prevent such tragedies in the future.
