Crime – A former Uttar Pradesh minister narrowly escaped a suspected assassination attempt in Hapur district after an alleged attacker’s firearm failed to discharge, according to police officials.

Incident Reported in Garhmukteshwar Area
The episode took place late Monday evening in the Garhmukteshwar region of Hapur. Former minister of state and Samajwadi Party leader Madan Chauhan was on his way to Hirnapura village to attend a family engagement ceremony when the incident unfolded.
Police said Chauhan had exited an expressway and was approaching the village when another vehicle carrying several young men reportedly blocked his path. The sudden interception raised alarm among those travelling with him.
Alleged Attempt to Open Fire
Chauhan later informed authorities that one of the individuals stepped out of the car and pointed a pistol in his direction. The assailant allegedly attempted to fire, but the gun did not go off. The reason behind the weapon’s failure to discharge remains unclear.
Security personnel accompanying the former minister reacted quickly and tried to catch the suspects. However, the occupants of the other vehicle managed to escape before they could be detained. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Police Register FIR, Investigation Underway
Following the complaint filed by Chauhan, police registered a First Information Report and began an investigation. Additional Superintendent of Police Vineet Bhatnagar confirmed that teams have been deployed to identify and trace those involved.
Officials are reviewing available evidence and gathering inputs from witnesses in the area. Surveillance footage from nearby routes is also expected to be examined to determine the movement of the suspect vehicle.
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the attack was politically motivated or linked to any personal dispute. Police said all angles are being explored as part of the inquiry.
Security Measures and Political Context
The incident has drawn attention to the security of political leaders in Uttar Pradesh, particularly during private visits and public events. Chauhan, a senior figure associated with the Samajwadi Party, has remained active in regional political affairs.
While the former minister did not sustain any physical harm, the attempted attack has prompted discussions about tightening protective arrangements for public representatives. Police officials stated that necessary steps will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
Local residents in Garhmukteshwar reported heightened police presence following the incident. Patrol units have been deployed in and around Hirnapura village as part of precautionary measures.
Search for Suspects Continues
Investigators are currently working to identify the suspects and determine the motive behind the alleged attack. According to police sources, efforts are being intensified to track down the vehicle used in the incident.
Officials emphasized that maintaining law and order remains a priority and assured that those responsible will be brought to justice. Further updates are expected as the probe progresses.
The case highlights ongoing concerns related to political violence and public safety in the region, though authorities have urged against speculation until the investigation is complete.
