AI Content Guidelines News: On the internet and social media To combat the growing number of deepfakes and AI-generated misleading content Central Govt How is the waist? Important changes have been made in the Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2021, and these new rules will come into force across the country from 20 February 2026. Due to this, the responsibility of social media companies will now increase several times.
3 hour deadline only!
Earlier, social media platforms had 36 hours to delete any offensive content. However, as per the new rules, if an AI content is found to be illegal or misleading, it will have to be removed from the platform within 3 hours only. This is being considered as a very important change to maintain law and order.
A new definition of ‘Synthetic Content’
The government has now clearly defined ‘synthetically generated information’. This will include the following: Artificial audio, video and photos that are created by algorithms in such a way that they sound realistic. Also, acceptable photo editing, color correction, translation or technical enhancements will not be considered synthetic, unless they are misleading.

‘Warning’ to users every 3 months
Now digital platforms have to remind their users about the rules and laws every three months. Sharing of objectionable content generated by AI may lead to action under the following laws:
- IT Act
- Indian Judicial Code 2023 (BNS)
- POCSO Act
- Representation of the People Act
Identification of AI content is mandatory
Social media companies will now have to deploy specialized technical tools to identify AI content. It will be mandatory to clearly label AI content. A video or photo must have a permanent ‘digital identity’ or ‘metadata’ attached to it, which cannot be removed.
There will be a strict ban on ‘these’ things:
- Sharing private or obscene photos/videos of anyone without consent.
- AI content depicting weapons, explosives or violence.
- Deepfake presentation of people or important events.
- Creating false documents or electronic records.
Legal protection at risk?
If any company does not comply with these rules, the legal protection they enjoy may be terminated. That is, the company can also be held liable for illegal content posted on that platform.
