On Tuesday evening, many people across India experienced a strange problem. They suddenly encountered difficulties making online payments. From buying vegetables to paying at tea shops, a simple message appeared on their phones stating that the payment had failed. This problem wasn't related to poor internet or empty bank accounts. Rather, the country's popular digital payment system went down in several places at the same time. The problem began in the evening and affected people in several cities. Users were left confused, and shop owners were left waiting. Millions of people who rely on quick scans and taps faced delays in their daily work. However, some users have made successful payments. It's unclear how widespread the impact is, as people are still reporting failed payments on X.

Report on DownDetector
Data from the outage tracker DownDetector showed that complaints increased sharply as the evening progressed. At the time of writing, more than 500 users had reported problems while making payments. Most complaints were about failed transactions during routine transfers. Nearly 82 percent of users said they were unable to complete payments. Another 12 percent reported problems scanning QR codes at shops and street vendors. Other users experienced difficulties sending money to others. As the minutes passed, the number of reports grew to over 600.

Outage Map
The outage map indicated a widespread impact, not a localized problem. Major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, and Jaipur received a significant number of reports. This indicated that the outage wasn't a specific bank-level issue, but rather a nationwide outage. Many users refreshed their apps today in hopes of finding relief.

Reactions on Social Media
Within minutes of the outage, reactions began pouring in on social media platforms, with screenshots of failed transactions circulating. People have even started joking, saying that once they recover, they'll have to deal with unpaid bills. People have shared stories of standing in front of grocery store counters, with long lines forming behind them.

On X, this quickly became a popular topic. People began confirming that this wasn't a one-off situation. Some compared it to going back to the era of cash. It's assumed that the situation will be managed with cash until services resume in all major cities in a few hours, tonight.
