According to ZnewsJacky recently attracted attention during an appearance on the variety show “The Main Guest and His Friends” on Feb. 7, where he spoke about his career and family background. He said the stature and influence of his parents in Hong Kong’s entertainment industry have long been a source of pressure as he tries to carve out his own identity.

Both Charles and Chen are highly influential figures in the industry, while Jacky said he feels he has yet to achieve comparable success. In a self-deprecating remark, he referred to himself as “the son who didn’t turn out well.”

“Honestly, if I turned out like this, don’t blame me. It’s my family’s fault,” he joked. “My family’s starting point was too high, so it only left me with a path downward. My journey [downward] has been smooth.”

His response to criticism drew laughter from the studio audience, and clips of his remarks quickly circulated on social media.

Charles has also publicly joked about his son’s career. The tycoon once said that after decades in the film industry, the only person he had failed to successfully promote was his own son, even calling his investment in Jacky’s career his “biggest failure.” The comments continue to generate online discussion.

Chen made headlines last month after announcing that she had finalized her will at age 67 and decided to exclude Jacky and his brother Jonathan from it, according to The Star. She also criticized her sons for lacking business acumen.

Now 42, Jacky entered the entertainment industry with considerable backing, collaborating early in his career with A-list stars including Jet Li, Tony Leung, Fan Bingbing, Huang Xiaoming, Angelababy and Louis Koo, according to QQ.

He has appeared in films such as “From Vegas to Macau 3,” “Investiture of the Gods,” “Call of Heroes,” “The Warlords” and “Fearless.” Despite a steady stream of roles, his performances have yet to garner major critical acclaim.

Charles, 78, founded Win’s Entertainment in the 1980s and later established China Star Entertainment, a Hong Kong-listed production company that played a key role in the rise of film icons including Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat, Stephen Chow, Andy Lau and director Johnnie To.

In 2022, the South China Morning Post estimated Charles’ net worth at US$1.2 billion.
