A UK car hire company operating in the West Midlands and North West England has plunged into administration after 45 years of business, in a major blow. Afford Rent a Car offered car and van hire across Staffordshire and Cheshire, with offices in Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford.

The company website claimed the brand offered the "best deal in town" with their pricing said to be "hard to beat". Afford Rent a Car said it has provided low-cost car and van hire options since 1981. However, business appears to have come to an end, with no word yet on potential job cuts.

According to The London Gazette, Crenoon Limited, operating under the trading name of 'Afford Rent a Car', confirmed the appointment of administrators on February 10.

The administration report includes the same address as Afford Rent a Car, based at the Royal Oak Garage, City Road, Fenton.

According to Stoke-on-Trent Live, a poster in the window reads: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, Afford is currently closed. If you are returning a vehicle please return the keys through the out-of-hours drop-off shoot located at the side of the building under the canopy by the air con units." [SIC]

Afford Rent a Car said its vehicles "boast low prices with no deposit, zero insurance excess and 3 locations for easy collection and drop off". It stressed that customers could save around 10% on long-term rentals due to a series of special offers.

The business explained online that they have a stock of more than 700 cars and vans which are "regularly changed" to ensure our customers' safety and satisfaction.

It's not the first car hire company to fall into difficulty, with Prohire falling into administration last summer.

Meanwhile, Zipcar ceased UK operations in January after a formal consultation process with its UK employees.
