The 56-year-old star, who rarely discusses his health publicly, spoke about the issue during a Monday talk show appearance with actress Carol Cheng. Addressing industry rumors that he had “lost his memory,” Koo said the symptoms are currently mild. He explained that he occasionally struggles to recall who someone is, even though he feels the person is familiar.
The condition has not significantly affected his work, he said. While filming, Koo is still able to memorize dialogue and remember blocking and action sequences. However, once production wraps, those details fade quickly. A year or two later, he may not even remember having taken part in a particular project.
Koo said he had previously worried that the issue might be linked to a brain hematoma diagnosed in his childhood, but doctors have ruled out any connection. As a child, he occasionally experienced temporary vision loss lasting more than 10 seconds. On some days, it occurred up to five times, alarming his parents.
Doctors at the time said the hematoma could have resulted from either an injury or complications during birth. They reassured his family that as his brain developed, the clot would no longer compress his nerves. Koo was prescribed medication, and the condition is no longer considered dangerous.
Koo rose to prominence through TVB dramas including “The Return of the Condor Heroes,” “Detective Investigation Files IV” and “A Step into the Past,” building a loyal fan base across Asia before shifting his focus primarily to films in the 2000s.
According to Theirshe has since been dubbed a new “mogul” of Hong Kong cinema. He has invested his own money and helped secure funding for projects such as “Warriors of Future,” the film adaptation of “A Step into the Past,” and “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In,” supporting jobs in the local film production sector.
Koo remains single and is known for keeping his private life low-profile. His only publicly confirmed relationship was with Natalie Wong, who won Miss Photogenic at the Miss Hong Kong 1994 pageant. After their breakup in 2002, he has not publicly acknowledged any other partners.
In an interview with HK01Koo said his family does not pressure him to marry or have children. While he once hoped to become a father, the Covid-19 pandemic shifted his perspective. He said he still has many responsibilities to fulfill and does not feel he has enough time to raise a child.
He added that he would only consider fatherhood when he can devote sufficient time to supporting his child through each stage of life.
