WhatsApp has stated that Russia has attempted to completely ban its service. The company's calling service was already banned there. Russia, on the other hand, maintains that the company must comply with the law.

Tensions between Russian and American companies are steadily increasing. In the latest incident, WhatsApp has stated that Russia has attempted to completely ban its service. A company spokesperson confirmed this, saying they will make every effort to keep users connected. It's worth noting that some WhatsApp services are already banned in Russia, and now recent reports indicate that it has been completely blocked. Previously, it was reported that Russia's communications watchdog, Roskomnadzor, had removed WhatsApp from the online directory. Around 1 million users use WhatsApp there.

Why is Russia taking strict action?

Since the war with Ukraine began, Russia has been cracking down on American companies. Furthermore, the government wants more of its citizens to use a government-run app called MAX. Critics say the government intends to track citizens through this app.

These WhatsApp features are already blocked in Russia

Russia banned WhatsApp and Telegram calling last year. Russia claims both platforms are not sharing information with law enforcement agencies regarding fraud and terrorism. Similarly, in December, Russia also banned Apple's FaceTime and Snapchat. The order stated that these apps were being used to plan and execute fraud and terrorist activities.

What is the government saying about lifting the ban?

The Russian government says that if Meta complies with its regulations, the ban may be considered. When asked whether the ban on WhatsApp would be lifted, a Kremlin spokesperson said that it was a matter of legal compliance. If Meta complies with the law and begins negotiations with Russian authorities, a compromise could be reached. However, if Meta is unwilling to comply with Russian laws, there is no chance of WhatsApp's ban being lifted.
