The Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) is launching a new mobile app by April 2026. Through this app, approximately 80 million EPFO members will be able to withdraw a fixed portion of their PF (Employee Provident Fund) directly through UPI. According to a PTI report, a portion of the EPF will remain locked, while the larger portion can be withdrawn directly into their bank account via UPI. This new system is part of the EPFO 3.0 upgrade, which aims to make PF withdrawals faster, paperless, and completely digital.
Currently, EPFO members must submit claims to withdraw PF, which is time-consuming. Under the new auto-settlement facility, claims will be settled electronically within three days without any manual intervention. The auto-settlement limit has already been increased from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh. This new system will simplify the process and reduce the workload on the EPFO. The EPFO settles over 50 million claims annually, most of which are related to PF withdrawals. According to sources, the government wants EPFO's services to be on par with banks.
Members will be able to transfer funds to their linked bank accounts almost instantly by entering their UPI PIN, eliminating the need for a lengthy claim process. PF funds for purposes such as illness, education, marriage, and housing will be available within three days. PF withdrawals using UPI may be limited to ₹25,000 per transaction. The app will clearly indicate the amount available for withdrawal. At least 25% of the total balance will be locked for retirement security. This feature will be available through the new EPFO app, which will be integrated with the BHIM app and other UPI platforms.
Trials ongoing
The Ministry of Labor and Employment is currently conducting trials on 100 dummy accounts to iron out any technical issues before launch. After the public launch in April 2026, the new app will be the primary platform for UPI withdrawals, while the EPFO Unified Member Portal and UMANG app will continue to function for other services.
