New Delhi: Zimbabwe pulled off one of the greatest upsets of all time with a clinical 23-run over 2021 champions Australia in a Group B match of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
It is the first upset of the ongoing edition, with injury-plagued Australia suffering their second loss to Zimbabwe in a T20 World Cup match. The African nation had stunned the Aussies in the inaugural edition in 2007 at Cape Town.
Sent into bat, Zimbabwe scored a strong total of 169 for two, their highest T20I total against Australia.
Openers Brian Bennett (64 not out off 56 balls) and Tadiwanashe Marumani (35 off 21) laid the perfect platform for Zimbabwe with a 61-run stand in 7.3 overs.
Ryan Burl (35 off 30 balls) and skipper Sikandar Raza (25 not out off 13 balls) also chipped in with useful contributions.
In reply, Australia’s top-order crumbled inside the powerplay before Matt Renshaw (65 off 44) and Glenn Maxwell (31 off 32) steadied the ship for the 2021 world champions. However, Zimbabwe kept picking up wickets at regular intervals and eventually folded for 146 in 19.3 overs.
Right-arm fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani (4/15) registered career-best figures while Brad Evans (3/23) also bowled a superb spell.
