New Delhi : The general elections held in Bangladesh on 12 February 2025 changed the entire map of politics. This election was historic after 18 months of instability and violence. Due to the ban on Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, she could not contest. BNP made a strong comeback and won majority. Also many small parties were wiped out. The interesting thing was that parties with names and election symbols similar to many Indian parties were also in the elections but the public rejected them.

BNP’s spectacular victory

Let us tell you that BNP captured 209 out of 299 seats. The alliance got a total of 212 seats. Tariq Rehman won from both Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6 seats. This victory means a lot for Tariq, who returned to the country after 17 years. Allies Ganosamhati Andolan, Bangladesh Jatiya Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad got one seat each.

Strong presence of Jamaat alliance

Jamaat-e-Islami emerged as the second largest party by winning 68 seats. The alliance secured a total of 77 seats. National Citizen Party (NCP) of student leaders got 6 seats. Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis got two seats and Khilafat Majlis got one seat. Independent candidates also won some seats but many big parties like Jasad, Workers Party and Communist Party could not open their accounts.

Parties with Indian symbols eliminated

In the elections, parties with names and symbols similar to India were in the news. Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) with bullock cart symbol got only one seat. The accounts of Bangladesh Republican Party with elephant symbol and Jatiya Party with bicycle symbol remained blank. The parties with hand and lantern symbols also failed completely. The public completely rejected these parties.

Historical referendum and voting

This time every voter cast two votes. One for electing the government and the other for the referendum on constitutional amendment. The public voted ‘yes’ with an overwhelming majority. Voting percentage was 59.44. Among the approximately 12.7 crore voters, a large number were youth and first-time voters. One million security personnel were deployed for security.
