An interior designer and self-proclaimed 'former rich person' has revealed the best shade to paint your bedroom for capturing the 'old money' look without breaking the bank.
The 'old money' trend, a design approach that emulates the appearance of inherited generational wealth, has swept through the interior design world in recent years. Kiki Astor, a romance author and interior designer with extensive expertise in the 'old money' aesthetic, has shared insights from her time residing in the exclusive Montecito, California area - where Prince Harry and Meghan also lives.
She recently provided guidance on the most sophisticated colour for transforming your bedroom to embrace an 'old money' way of life while maintaining a modest budget.
"There's only one appropriate colour to paint your bedroom in the old money aesthetic. Some of you won't like it, so go ahead and prove me wrong," she said in a TikTok video.
She went on: "Oh, I know that psychologists say, 'Oh, you should have a blue bedroom, it promotes sleep, it's so restful' - what do they know about style?"
However, she noted for those determined to have a blue bedroom, it's essential to incorporate the shade with carefully chosen décor including artwork, Persian carpets, and brown furnishings.
"If you don't do that, it's going to look like a nursery. Don't say I didn't warn you," Kiki warned, before continuing to say that green should also be avoided in the bedroom.
"I know I've said that green is the most old money colour to paint most rooms in your house, but not your bedroom," she declared, insisting that green walls could cast an unflattering appearance when people are undressing.
Kiki went on to share her forthright views on bedroom colour palettes, maintaining that white is absolutely off-limits, because, in her words, a bedroom isn't an art gallery.
Her firm stance with other colours as she continued: "Not red, that awakens passions. Do not paint it grey, people used to know how to use grey appropriately, that knowledge has been lost."
What colour should you paint your bedroom?"The only appropriate colour to paint a bedroom is pink," she declared. "Not bubblegum pink, not hot pink. No, you paint it the sort of neutral pink that you can tell your husband is beige.
"He'll believe you. I promise he believes everything you say," she jokingly said.
This guidance struck a chord, with followers in the comments backing her viewpoint.
One viewer agreed with Kiki's opinion as they said: "As a lady with a pink bedroom who told her husband it's beige... yes," while another agreed: "This is true y'all it's the cosiest possible colour."
A grateful response came from someone who had been considering green but reconsidered: "My primary room was going to be green. I am yellow toned. Thank you for saving me from myself."
On the other hand, not everyone was persuaded by Kiki's pink haven, with one person remarking: "Old money here! We actually wallpaper our walls."
By contrast, another individual amusingly revealed their economic reality: "I'm no money and my bedroom is the landlord special."
