On Sunday, England's leg-spinner Adil Rashid made history by surpassing Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga, becoming the fifth-highest wicket-taker in men's T20 International cricket. The 37-year-old accomplished this milestone by taking three wickets for 36 runs in four overs during a Group C match against Scotland at Eden Gardens.
Currently, Hasaranga ranks sixth with 154 wickets from 95 matches and 93 innings in T20Is, boasting an impressive bowling average of 16.05, including five four-wicket hauls.
In contrast, Rashid has now claimed 155 wickets in 140 matches and 133 innings, maintaining a bowling average of 23.43, with four instances of taking four wickets in a match.
Ahead of Rashid in the rankings are Mustafizur Rahman from Bangladesh (158), New Zealand's Ish Sodhi (162), former pacer Tim Southee (164), and Afghanistan's Rashid Khan (190).
England Defeats Scotland in T20 World Cup Match
In the match, England secured a five-wicket victory over Scotland, highlighted by Tom Banton's impressive half-century and Rashid's three-wicket performance. This win marked the end of England's winless streak against European teams in the T20 World Cup.
The streak began with a surprising defeat to the Netherlands in the 2009 T20 World Cup at Lord's, followed by two losses to the Netherlands, a defeat to Ireland, and no results against Ireland and Scotland.
Following this match, England stands second in Group C with two wins and one loss, accumulating four points, while Scotland is in third place with one win and two losses. The West Indies currently lead the group with two victories.
Scotland's Innings
England won the toss and chose to bowl first. The opening bowlers, Jofra Archer (2/24 in four overs) and Sam Curran (1/33 in 3.4 overs), quickly reduced Scotland to 42 for 3 in just 5.5 overs.
A partnership of 71 runs between Michael Jones (33 off 20 balls, including five fours and a six) and captain Richie Berrington (49 off 32 balls, with five fours and two sixes) helped Scotland recover.
However, the spin duo of Rashid (3/36 in four overs) and Liam Dawson (2/34 in four overs) dismantled Scotland's momentum, leading to their collapse from 113 for 3 to 152 all out in 19.4 overs. Tom Bruce (24 off 18 balls) and Oliver Davidson (20* off 15 balls) contributed valuable runs as wickets fell around them.
England's Run-Chase
During the chase, England faced early setbacks, losing both openers Phil Salt (2) and Jos Buttler (3), finding themselves at 13 for 2 within two overs.
All-rounder Jacob Bethell (32 off 28 balls, with two fours and a six) played a crucial role, forming a 66-run partnership with Banton.
After the departure of skipper Harry Brook for just four runs, Banton (63* off 41 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes) received support from Sam Curran (28 off 20 balls) and Will Jacks (16* off 10 balls) as England reached their target in 18.2 overs, with five wickets remaining.
Banton was awarded the 'Player of the Match' for his outstanding performance.
